The Shield House marks a departure from the idiom of deep overhanging roofs with a modified vertical side roofline to give the house the added protection against the sun. The dangling shingle roof is set out two feet away from the walls, and slants down in varying degrees, giving the appearance of a shield that wraps around the house.
A courtyard punctuates the center to aid cross and natural ventilation. Mature trees line the west-facing façade to provide extra shading to the house.
The house has an open deck on the rooftop to gain views of the surrounding.
